Flax Weaving

One of the new courses coming up this term is Raranga (Flax Weaving) on Mondays 6.30pm to 8.30pm starting on 7 May. In this hands-on class you will have the chance to create your own beautiful objects such as kete, baskets, flowers or mats using tradional and contemporary Maori weaving techniques. During the course students will also learn how to collect and prepare harakeke (flax). Tutor Asih Sofyan is a Waiheke artist and performer enjoys helping others to express their own creativity. ‘Web 2.0’ and social media for community groups

Are you a non-profit group or community organisation based in Auckland city?
Are you a novice when it comes to using the web and social media?
Do you have a story to tell… an event to publicise… a subject to research… a group to promote?
Would you like to know more about how they can help your group?
Would you like the chance to ask questions, in a supportive environment?

If you answered YES to these questions, then come along to a FREE workshop introducing the basics of Web 2.0 and social media, especially tailored for community groups. It’s happening at locations across Auckland city, with thanks to Auckland Council.

What will the workshop cover?

The workshop will provide you with an introduction to the basic terms and building blocks of ‘Web 2.0′ and social media, including:

wikis
podcasting

You’ll get the opportunity to ask questions in a supportive environment, and information and resources to use at home.

Attendance is free – though numbers are limited to one place per organisation (unless there are free spaces available), so get in quick to book yours.

Our popular Drawing course returns this term starting Tuesday 28 February at 6.30pm. Previous students have said “highly recommended” “very enjoyable” and “this is the most effective and helpful art class I’ve taken”. The course is suitable for beginners and more advanced and is designed for people wanting to learn drawing into a sketchbook while travelling or just to learn the basics of drawing. If you’ve always wanted to learn to use Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign here’s your chance. Graphic Designer Craig Kinney will be teaching an 8 week course on Tuesdays 7pm to 9pm for just $120. Whether you’re going overseas or an armchair traveller, the Italian for Travellers course will give you a taste of the Italian language and culture.

This 8 week course on Mondays 7pm to 9pm will introduce you to Italian pronunciation, greetings, asking for information, and basic conversation. Michelle Chote is an experienced language tutor, who is passionate about the Italian language and making learning fun. Just ask Jim and Jane who attended the Italian course and had a wonderful trip to Italy last year!

Herbal Health is a new six week course with Helen Elscot, Waiheke’s Medical Herbalist and Natropath, starting on Tuesday 21 February at 6.30pm. The course includes an introduction to herbal remedies that you can use at home, and covers medicinal herbs and a practical workshop where you can make your own health and beauty products. Halloumi cheese made at home

Katherine Mowbray is returning to Waiheke with a new 1 Day course on Saturday 11 February. The course will demonstrate how to make Halloumi, Ricotta and Feta, all from one bucket of milk, with a bit of marscapone on the side. Even if you’re not lucky enough to have your own cow or goat you can learn to make these three delicious cheeses using shop bought milk. And there’s a special discount for groups of three or more friends.

Organic Gardening is a six week course all about growing healthy food in your own backyard, using organic and permaculture principles. The course is on Tuesdays 6pm to 8.30pm starting from 1 November.

Tutor Roz Sainsbury from Gardeners By Nature has lived and gardened on Waiheke for 15 years. She believes that everyone can be a gardener, and it doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated to create a successful garden. The course is not just for those new to gardening, but also for people wanting to address particular issues or just looking for inspiration in the garden. The course includes practical work and plenty of garden visits, so bring your gardening shoes!

Boatmaster course starting 1 August

Waiheke residents have the chance to attend a locally run Boatmaster Certificate course starting from 1 August. The course is usually run on the island once every 2 years.

Tutor Christie Ralphs says “The Boatmaster course is ideal for boaties with some existing experience who want to increase their knowledge and confidence to deal with different situations.” The course is wide-ranging and informative, with the added benefit of Christy’s local knowledge and experience.

Previous student Michael Green describes the course as essential for all boaties. “I’ve done a fair bit of boating,” he says. “But there’s always more to learn. It’s amazing what you think you know – and don’t.”
